{"id":3887,"date":"2015-12-06T10:49:02","date_gmt":"2015-12-06T14:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rockwellblake.com\/blog\/?p=3887"},"modified":"2015-12-06T10:49:02","modified_gmt":"2015-12-06T14:49:02","slug":"advice-for-the-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/06\/advice-for-the-young\/","title":{"rendered":"Advice for the Young"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m getting my work done.\u00a0 I have a mission and it looms over everything I do, but no one can \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4XlEzY4tMyg?t=1m43s\" target=\"_blank\">Tote that barge<\/a>\u201d until barges cease to be, or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4XlEzY4tMyg?t=1m45s\" target=\"_blank\">lift that bail<\/a>\u201d until no bail shall be left to lift.\u00a0 It is a special work for me; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_2?_encoding=UTF8&amp;sort=relevancerank&amp;search-alias=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;field-author=Donald%20V.%20Paschke\" target=\"_blank\">editing this Garcia book<\/a>.\u00a0 I started out reading Donald Paschke\u2019s translation with a tenor attitude.\u00a0 You know,,,, I couldn\u2019t really understand how it was important and if people were handing me contracts all the time, what good was that dead white guy going to do me anyway?\u00a0 Now I\u2019m older and totally in love with Paschke\u2019s brilliant idea.\u00a0 By sifting together two different editions of Garcia\u2019s \u201cMethod\u201d he allows the reader to discover for him\/her-self some very subtle secrets that\u00a0are becoming even more fascinating for me as I approach the end\u2026. Not my end, I hope,,,, but the end of my first edit of the first book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Barge and\u00a0Bail&#8221; Song<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4XlEzY4tMyg\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Paul Robeson had a great voice, didn&#8217;t he?<\/p>\n<p>As important as I know it is to make Garcia\u2019s writings available to young singers, I just had to drop the \u201cTote\u201d rope and break away from my stack of editing \u201cbails\u201d to jump on an opportunity to be useful to two singers who asked for my advice.\u00a0 I hope helping them in plain view may also be helpful to you.<\/p>\n<p>What fun it is to have a request coming from Sweden. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jenny_Lind\" target=\"_blank\">Jenny Lind<\/a> left Sweden looking for Garcia\u2019s help, and in Paris he put her singing back on track.\u00a0 The results are historic.\u00a0 Well, another Swede, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/petter.reingardt\" target=\"_blank\">Petter Reingardt<\/a>, is seeking my advice.\u00a0 I hope I can make Garcia as helpful to this tenor as the Grand Maestro was to that stellar soprano who started her life in Petter\u2019s neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>The tipping point to distraction from my\u00a0present \u201cbarge\u201d and \u201cbails\u201d landed in my Email as a response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/master-classes-2\/letter-to-rossini-award-contestants-11162015\/\" target=\"_blank\">letter I sent<\/a> to everyone I recently heard in LA.\u00a0 I was there to audition singers for the <a href=\"http:\/\/palmspringsoperaguild.org\/rossini-prize-announced-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Palm Springs Opera Guild Rossini Award<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 One of the respondents asked me to cover the same program about which the Swedish tenor was asking advice.\u00a0 I just couldn\u2019t pass up the opportunity to make a blog of my answer.\u00a0 Besides, pulling \u201cbarges\u201d and handling \u201cbails\u201d are kind of heavy work for tenors anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Some time ago I asked Petter if I could blog my answers to his questions, and he graciously accepted to be outed as a singer seeking help.\u00a0 My correspondent from the Palm Springs Opera Guild Rossini Award auditions may not want to be publicly exposed, and, since I didn\u2019t ask, her <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/nx5GwULPU90?t=6s\" target=\"_blank\">name is changed<\/a> to protect the innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Petter Reingardt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>3. I feel that my voice is quite small but high and light. I&#8217;m searching for that dark timbre you have by breathing low, relaxing jaw and throat, and keeping the larynx in a lower position. Now I wonder: have you ever felt that your voice is not big enough? They lurk between\u00a0many lines of Garcia\u2019s writings. \u00a0I find almost all of them related to a consensus existent during the many days of Garcia\u2019s life.\u00a0 I am talking about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/consensus\" target=\"_blank\">consensus<\/a> that existed between Garcia, other vocal maestri, critics reporting on the musical doings in their region as well as the majority of the audience Garcia would join when he would attend performances.\u00a0 When Garcia would sit to hear great singers ply their trade on the stage, Garcia and his fellow audience members would enthusiastically applauded and bravo their work according to the satisfaction these singers would provide, and critics wrote of these events with a level of understanding I believe no longer exists.\u00a0 If the singer happened to be a student of Garcia, his pedagogical competition might have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/curb-your-enthusiasm\/\" target=\"_blank\">curbed their enthusiasm<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Partisan_(political)\" target=\"_blank\">partisan<\/a> reasons, but even they would have agreed on one assumption.\u00a0 The great singer they heard had a great gift, and what that gift consisted of was recognized by just about everyone who would applaud.\u00a0 Consensus was there, and a singer of Jenny Lind\u2019s caliber could attain the same level of fame in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.victorianweb.org\/authors\/carlyle\/signs\/brendlinger.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mechanical Age<\/a>\u00a0as Luciano Pavarotti did in our Age of <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/hypermedia\" target=\"_blank\">Hyper Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is my advice?\u00a0 Don\u2019t lower your larynx to make your sound larger, and don\u2019t expect the lowered larynx to make your high notes more beautiful.\u00a0 Laryngeal position management has nothing to do with attaining the best display of a singer\u2019s gift.\u00a0 The larynx moves about as a participating component of the vocal instrument that attains an endless list of vocal effects.\u00a0 The beauty of one\u2019s high notes and ultimate greatness of the individual gift is independent of such technical considerations.\u00a0 Garcia tells us teachers to seek out these gifts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Often one needs an experienced judgment to recognize in the voice of the student the germ of the true qualities which it possesses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then he speaks of the first job of a teacher:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Generally, these qualities are only in the rudimentary state, or well veiled by numerous faults from which it is necessary to free them.<\/p>\n<p>The essential point is to first establish the existence of them; one then manages to complete the development of them by patient and orderly studies.<\/p>\n<p>Voices in their natural states are nearly always unpolished, unequal, unsteady, even tremulous, and, finally, heavy and of short range; only study, but a well-informed and persistent study, can make firm the intonation, purify the timbres, perfect the intensity and the elasticity of the tone.\u00a0 Through study, one can smooth the harsh-nesses, the disparities of the registers, and by uniting them to each other, one can extend the scope of the voice.\u00a0 Study will make us acquire agility, a quality generally too much neglected, especially in Italy.\u00a0 It is necessary to submit to rigorous exercise not only the stubborn organs, but also those which, drawn along by a dangerous facility, cannot control their movements.\u00a0 That apparent flexibility is connected to lack of clarity, steadiness, balance, and breadth; that-is-to-say, to the absence of all the elements of accent and style.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The above text is on page 3 of the book I am about to finish editing.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be back to tell my friends how I think Garcia would advise them further if he were still with us.<\/p>\n<p>While putting this blog together I\u2019ve let a few too many \u201cbails\u201d pile up and that \u201cbarge\u201d is drifting away&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>HEY YOU!!!!
