By the end of his life, he may have heard the term used, but I have no knowledge of him ever using the terms \u201cBelt\u201d or Belting\u201d in anything he wrote down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In technical terms, to\u00a0belt is to sing with a brilliant sound which is almost always the result of \u201c<a title=\"Chest Voice\" href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/what-is-it-about\/glossary\/chest-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chest Voice<\/a>\u201d. Ladies belt by singing in chest voice above the normal <a title=\"Chest Register\" href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/what-is-it-about\/glossary\/chest-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">chest register<\/a>. Garcia argues against this practice in terms of taste as well as vocal health. Guys belt most of the time without intending to do so. The chest register for boys is all there is for registers, but the function of falsetto can be imposed anywhere in the male voice. This duet is a great side by side comparison of boys \u201c<a title=\"Falsetto\" href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/what-is-it-about\/glossary\/falsetto\/\" target=\"_blank\">Falsetto<\/a>\u201d in his \u201c<a title=\"Chest Register\" href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/what-is-it-about\/glossary\/chest-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chest Register<\/a>\u201d next to a girls \u201c<a title=\"Chest Voice\" href=\"https:\/\/rockwellblake.com\/blog\/what-is-it-about\/glossary\/chest-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chest Voice<\/a>\u201d in every register visited.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of the advent and improvements to amplification, Broadway singers are no longer required to learn how to produce enough sound with their vocal apparatus to be autonomous artists. These days, mikes are small enough to be hidden and advanced enough to be high fidelity even wirelessly. Back in the old days mikes were hard to find, and who needed them anyway? Back then the actual decibels\u00a0produced used to be a BIG factor in the STYLE of singing called \u201cBelting\u201d. If you were a successful belter before 1950 you made a lot of noise. It would seem that today\u2019s \u201cBelting\u201d is a pale reminder of the \u201cGreat Belting\u201d of the past. If your \u201cBelting\u201d needs a mike to be heard, someone from the pre 1950 vocal world would probably say that you don\u2019t really have a voice. I would lamentably agree.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We modern vocal types have to be thankful that the mike existed back in the days of traditional values.
